smirks

It scares me to stand behind the word Innerpreneur.

As much as it connects me to you, and encompasses my views on business, life and everything in between, I am conscious of how the word, a word that references that which is within us, appears to others.

Do you experience the smirks?

Perhaps in your social life spirituality is an open topic but in mine it is not. Reading this blog is more a window into my soul than most people get. Me, in person, unless I sense that you are open to it, you will only catch a glimpse of my spirit. It just isn’t something I share openly. I don’t like the smirks and whether it is wrong or right, I have no desire to share such an important piece of my Self with someone who is not open to it.

Business as a spiritual practice? Seriously?

In my life business and money are talked of ad nauseum but usually not in the way I see them. Seriously Tara, who cares about creating meaning when you can make more money? Score another smirk for me.

To put business and spirituality together – to speak about my spirituality openly and build my business around it, well… I feel open to mockery. And I am. And it scares me.

But whether I like it or not, no matter how traditional, less “hippie” people view it, the meaning behind the word Innerpreneur — it is my truth. And it will still be there with me whether I use this word or another.

  • So excited to have found your site - this post actually came at a great time for me, particularly when I've been thinking about how to integrate the various aspects of my life that often don't seem related (day job, creative endeavors, etc.) New follower in me!
  • Great to meet you, Laura. Welcome to the community.
  • Good to read this, Tara – and I appreciate that it's not easy putting your innerside out there.

I'm happily (and hippily) exploring the innerpreneur concept / practice. Not sure yet what it means for me – and not sure if I would comfortably, publicly apply it to myself, but I'm interested in how it might work in relation to the tension between self and selflessness – being by serving or, more crudely, getting by giving.

Can innerpreneurs seek selflessness? Does the urge to market the enterprise and serve the 'brand' and feed the tangible Self impede the inner journey?

Pondering... Thanks for the inspiration to think on this.

  • Cath,

In my short experience as an Innerpreneur I have found that feeding my
Self feeds my business. It appears to me to be the strongest tool in
building a strong and meaningful business.

this really touches my heart. i used to afraid in the same way you're talking about and that fear kept me from doing some of the things i really wanted to do. i have since restructured my life to surround myself with more supportive and open hearted people, so that in my world - being open and true to myself is not smirked at, it's celebrated and supported. i wish for a world where we all experience this kind of support and acceptance, it's so important.
  • I agree, Andrea. It has been such a freeing experience for me to write
this blog and connect with like-minded people. I'm glad to know I am
    not alone.

Tara, actually what makes you more of a leader is the fact that you do care with conviction. Religion, no matter what, always has an element in everything we do in life, so why not in business. When you start to compromise your beliefs and values for the almightly dollar, that is when you lose a part of yourself and your business goes belly up. Having the compassion and passion that you have, allows you to succeed more so than the average person because you have been able to stay grounded. I may be a little more subjective in my opinion about you, but it is because I care. As far as, anyone else telling you otherwise, tell them to blow it out of their...you know what. Besides, just remember the whole reason behind why you created your business and the use of the term " Innerpreneur" and what it stands for. Now, you go girl!!! Love Ann
  • Thank you, Ann. You are such a fantastic source of support. I am so
happy to have you as an aunt... and as a reader.

'Fuck 'em', you cannot allow yourself to be deterred by idiots.

    >...whether I use this word or another.

Like what? (Because I've been wanting a better one since before I came into this.)
But, rather than look for an alternative that's perhaps more acceptable, it's preferable to go-bold on the existing one - for which there's strong potential aspirational affinity.)
  • gulliver,

I always appreciated your conviction. It's inspiring. Thank you.
  • You have it right. Everything is connected and who we are in spirit reflects in all areas whether we want it to or not. So, why not embrace it and allow business to take on a deeper more fulfilling role than just money? Wise words from a wise Innerpreneureal thought leader!

    YES - a leader! That's you.
  • Thank you, Adam. I appreciate the support.
